Karen Freberg is transferring to the University of Florida from Southern Methodist University, and will compete for the Gators in the shot, discus, weight, and hammer.
While at SMU, Karen achieved an indoor best of 52’ 4 ˝” in the shot put. She was the top freshman in the shot at the NCAA indoor championship, finishing 12th. Karen was also the Western Athletic Conference indoor shot put champion and WAC Indoor Freshman of the Year. By redshirting the outdoor season, she retains four seasons of outdoor eligibility at Florida.
Competing for San Luis Obispo High School (CA), Karen had the 2nd all-time national high school shot mark outdoors (53’ 7 ˝”) and 3rd all-time indoors (52’4 ˝”). She was a two-time National Scholastic Indoor Champion, meet record holder, Armory stadium record holder, and New Balance All-American. Karen won California State titles in the shot in 2000 and 2001, and was runner-up in 1999. She placed 6th in the California State discus in 2001. Karen took 6th place in the voting for Track & Field News’ 2001 Female High School Athlete of the Year. She also won the prestigious Golden West Invitational in 2000, and was a three-time champion in the shot at the Mt. Sac Relays.
Karen won the California State Women’s Powerlifting Championship as a 15-year-old, and holds four national American Powerlifting Federation age group records.
Karen transfers to Florida from Southern Methodist University with a 3.4 grade point average and All WAC Conference Academic Honors. She will be majoring in Public Relations.
Karen has two sisters—Kristin, a 2001 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, and Karla, a high school senior. Her father, Roger, was an All-American in the discus for UCLA.
Karen chose Florida to develop her skills to national caliber in the shot, discus, weight and hammer.
