Super Summer Cross Country Clinic

August 17th - Mt. SAC

There will be a great “Super Summer” cross country clinic presented by the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles on Saturday, August 17, at Mt. SAC college in Walnut, which will not only have several different sessions for every level of coach from beginner to very advanced but will be absolutely FREE to all who are interested—this includes coaches, parents, and athletes.

You can pre-register for the clinic by downloading the clinic flier and registration form at the web site: www.aafla.org (select “Coaching Education” and AAF/CIF Coaching Education Program).

If you cannot download the registration form, you may pre-register by simply sending your name, home address, and daytime phone number to the following address: Palmer Addressing & Mailing Company, P.O. Box 61, Beverly Hills, CA 90213.

You may also call of fax your registration information to Palmer Addressing at Phone: 310-204-1988 - Fax: 310-204-1901.

You can also register at the door on the day of the clinic, Saturday, August 17, beginning at 7:45 AM.

This “Super Summer” clinic will feature both a full schedule of sessions exclusively designed for the beginning coach and also a full Advanced schedule geared to the experienced coach.

There will be many highlights at this clinic including a keynote address as well as two more Advanced sessions presented by Ron Mann of Northern Arizona University, considered throughout the nation to be one of the finest college coaches in our sport.

Coach Mann has been one of the top coaches in the nation for more than two decades. No one is better at developing the team concept for success in cross country, and no one is better at taking the average high school runner and bringing him or her to national class status.

There will also be an entire Track devoted to female distance running featuring former world record holder in the marathon, Jacqueline Hanson, and UCLA great and current boys cross country coach at Santa Monica High School, Tania Fisher.

Coaches Hanson and Fisher will be presenting sessions on the challenges of women coaching high school boys and high school girls being coached by men, and Ken Reeves, formerly of Nordhoff High School, will discuss how to build the depth needed for a successful girls team; furthermore, there will be a great session on the past, present and future of women’s distance running and another one the importance of nutrition.

Another advanced session will be presented by Jack Farrell, formerly of Thousand Oaks, who coached Kim Mortenson to the national 3200 meter high school record and whose boys team not only won the State Division 1 title but also ran the fastest time ever by a California team on the Woodward Park course.

There will be even more sessions including a complete pool demonstration from Bill Tokar of Ventura and Reeves; how to get your team to peak at the right time by Kevin Smith and JJ Castner of State Division 4 champions, Oak Park; Manny Bautista of two time State Community College Champions, Mesa College, on findings from the recent USATF Distance Summit, and more.

In addition to all these advanced session, there will be a full Track geared directly toward the beginning coach.

Sessions in the Beginning Track will include outlining the basic physiological principles of distance training, how to set up a season long training plan, recruiting and building a team, and all of the things a new coach should know to stay out of the doghouse of the school administration and the CIF.

All sessions at the clinic are open to all coaches, parents, or athletes who would like to attend, and the clinic, which will begin with registration at 7:45 AM and the first session starting at 8:30 AM, is not only absolutely free to everyone but also everyone who completes the entire clinic will receive a free copy of the 254 page revised AAF Cross Country Coaching manual.

If you have any questions, suggestions or comments, you can e-mail the clinic director, Tim O’Rourke, at torourke@emuhsd.k12.ca.us or call him at 626-914-2794 or you can call Jacqueline Hanson at AAF office at 323-730-4618 or 323-730-4600.

The clinic will be held at Mt. SAC in Building 9C-the Student Life Center Building—in the center of the main part of the Mt. SAC campus (not near the track stadium). The best place to park would be in Lot D. The entrance to Lot D is just off of Temple Ave. on the south side of the campus. There are no parking restrictions on Saturdays.

Once you have parked in Lot D, follow the signs north to the center of the campus and Building 9C.
