“Hello World! I’m working hard and having fun,” says Maurice Greene
2 August 2002

The IAAF is delighted to welcome the World’s Fastest Man – Maurice Greene – as a regular On-line Diary contributor. Read, in his own words, what he thinks about red Ferraris, the French Riviera, working hard and a band called DMX …

"I am currently back home in Los Angeles after spending almost a month in Europe. My season so far has had its ups and down but that’s sport. At the moment I am training very seriously, working hard on details so that I can come back to Europe for the second part of the season and run as fast as possible.

"The last time you saw me on a track was in Monaco for the Herculis Golden League meeting. I must tell you how much I love that place. It is so relaxing and beautiful. Each year I try to stay in the Principality as much as possible and in 2002 I stayed for a week before my competition.

"In the gorgeous red Ferrari I had rented for the week, and with my friend Ato Boldon at my side, I took the time to visit the Riviera. I particularly enjoyed Nice and Juan les Pins. I had a lot of fun on the beach there. I’d say the French Riviera is the perfect place for a holiday.

"In order to get rid of all the tension and stress that built up on my last European tour, I am now making use of my leisure time. I love going to the movies, I enjoy spending time with my friends and partying. I need to get my mind off the stress of the sport and, believe me, I’m doing that right now!

"My favourite music is Rap and R’nB. Before the start of a race, when I’m finalising my preparations, I always listen to a group called DMX. It motivates me.

"I didn’t get a chance to watch either the Commonwealth Games or the World Junior Championships on TV but I‘ve seen the results of the Juniors and all I can say is WOW! These youngsters are running fast. I was particularly impressed by the results of the USA team and I am sure that the next big name in track and field will be one of them.

"Well, the next time you’ll see me on a track will be in Zurich on 16 August for the next Golden League Meeting. I will fly out of LA on 10 August so that I have plenty of time to get acclimatised to the weather, the time difference and the place. I want to be totally ready for this very important race ...

"Speak to you again soon!"

Earl Simmons
BORN: December 18, 1970

It's obvious that hip-hop has finally come into its own when one of its most respected rappers (among all kinds of fans) is also one of its best-selling artists, and a successful crossover act to rock fans as well. DMX built himself an excellent reputation in the rap game, working the fragile territory between intense, metaphysical lyrical concerns and his image as a canine-obsessed personality who often uses a backing track to bark assent to his own raps. All this from a tremendously successful chart act, whose first three albums debuted at number one and sold well over ten million records in just a year and a half. With Nas and Jay-Z (both of whom also made it on an artistic and commercial level), DMX is the kingpin of hip-hop in the years after the twin giants, Biggie and 2Pac, were gunned down.

Helsinki, a Shot above the rest
2 August 2002 – Helsinki - Surely one of the greatest Men’s Shot Put contest of all-time with a starting line up that includes eight 21m plus competitors, is set to take place at the Asics Grand Prix Helsinki (IAAF GP II) on Tuesday 13 August, the first Grand Prix event to be held following the European Championships in Munich which take place between 6 to 11 August.

The American trio who have dominated the shot this season with a series of massive puts have for the first time this summer been brought together at a European meeting.

World and Olympic silver medallist Adam Nelson whose 22.51m performance in Portland on the 18 May heads the 2002 world lists, will be joined by fellow American’s Kevin Toth, who with 22.19m is the second longest thrower of the season, and World champion John Godina whose 21.91 lies third.

The Finns will put up a strong home defence. Finland this season boasts a list of five 20m plus throwers from which the Helsinki organizers can choose, and from these the Olympic champion Arsi Harju who threw 21.11 on 14 July, and world finallist Ville Tiisanoja who set a new personal best of 21.09 last Sunday, will lead the local challenge to the Americans.

Spain’s European indoor champion Manuel Martinez (21.47) is also on the start list, as is the world’s fourth furthest thrower of the season, South Africa’s Janus Robberts who threw 21.60 at the beginning of June. Ukraine's world championships 6th place Yuriy Belonog, with a season's best of 21.13 completes Helsinki's 21m party.
